Water filter pitcher versus lugging gallon jugs to and from the store…

I live in an apartment, and quickly found that the local tap water tastes horrible when drank straight (although it’s fine for cooking.) So I started buying jugs of water. I’m picky about the taste of water– I can’t stand most bottled “spring” water unless I’m extremely thirsty– and the one I like best is simply filtered municipal water, which only costs around 30 cents a gallon at the local grocery store if you bring your own jugs. In other words, the cost is negligible, only around $2 a month.

However, I don’t have a car and my roommate just moved out. Lugging a pair of gallon-sized water jugs a couple of blocks once every couple weeks or so is somewhat annoying, and I tend to put it off until I run out of water entirely.

So I’ve been considering one of the water filter pitcher jugs. From a quick web search on prices, it seems like a small one would only set me back about $10. The only thing that worries me is the cost of the new filters, which seem to be almost as high as the cost of the jug itself (unless I’m looking at the wrong type of filter.) How long does a filter last? And would I get enough gallons of drinkable water out of a single filter to justify the up-front expense?

Edit: A typo? In my subject line? It’s more likely than you think.
