We grow them big in New Orleans:)

I have picked up bulbs from various places, some I don’t even know where they come from, they just appeared in my yard. One that I can’t remember buying but that has come up the last few years is a giant spider lily. After I did research on the web I see they come in pink too, but I can’t find a source for pink ones, either locally or online, in the 48 states (hawaii sells them but doesn’t ship them here) For greater detail or a larger picture just click on the thumbnails

Behind the cut is a hibiscus that gets giant saucer flowers. I had my son hold up a ruler, and it was 8 inches across!

When I came across the ad for rabbit eye blueberries I was skeptical. A blueberry that can grow and bloom in our low chill and hot humid environment. Most high bush blueberries thrive in places like maine, a world apart weather wise than our climate. Still, I decided to give them a try.

You’ll notice one little blackberry in there. We just planted it and it hasn’t established yet, but we did get a few blackberries this year, hopefully next year it will take off like the blueberry bush did

some pretty daylily blooms, one of my favorites because they are super easy to grow, stick them in the ground and enjoy

Lastly, my dog, Izzy

Why, one might wonder, would I put a picture of my dog in a gardening post. Because of her, we have had to change the way we garden. Before Izzy we didn’t use a lot of chemicals anyway, but we did have the most beautiful angel trumpet

and various other beautiful, but poisonous plants. Our previous dog, Lucy, who died at the grand age of 17, never touched our plants, except to occasionally roll in the freshly dug ground. Izzy, however, finds the tender shoots of plants to be a delightful buffet she never tires of grazing on. She eats grass, young rose bushes, ginger, daylily leaves, etc. Because of her we had to figure out if we had anything poisonous and, if it was small enough to dig up, offer it on freecycle, otherwise it went into the chipper. Anyone else’s dogs thing young growing plants were put there just for them to enjoy?

I should add that she is perfectly healthy, and doesn’t eat grass or plants because of tummy upsets, she loves veggies and greens.
