Hi everyone! This is a weird question, but I know this community is all about being frugal and getting as much use out of items as possible before having to replace them, so maybe somebody knows what to do here.
It is about time for me to buy a new pair of shoes for work. I have to dress in a way that is at least sort of professional, so I wear some kind of low heeled pumps all the time. This is not ordinarily a problem-I don’t have any foot problems or anything like that. But what has become a problem recently is that after a really small number of wearings, shoes that fit fine in the store, or are even a little tight, are just too big! They feel like they are falling off my feet! This seems to happen no matter where I buy my shoes from or how much they cost. In order to get my shoes to last any length of time at all, I have to buy a size too narrow, which is painful, but if I buy them to fit, they are too loose in literally about 6 wearings. This, I cannot afford to do, even when the shoes cost only 10 bucks at payless.
I was given some advice recently that it’s probably the moisture from foot sweat, and that I should stuff the shoes with newspaper and/or shoe trees when I’m not wearing them. This has helped, but only a little bit, and it is really a pain to both wedge in the shoe trees and a whole bunch of newspaper into the gaps. (Because this is what it seems to take to maintain the shoes’ proper fit.)
Does anybody else have this problem with any kind of shoe? At this point I am afraid to buy anything but the 10 dollar cheapies at Payless, though I’d love to invest a little more in a good pair of pumps that will last several years. I could ask a higher-end salesperson for advice, of course, but I don’t want to get talked by the salesperson into buying something to solve or prevent this problem that really just makes the store money and doesn’t solve or prevent the problem. And is there anything I can do about the pairs of shoes I already have that are really still in good shape, but I can’t wear because they slip around on my feet just enough to drive me up the wall?
Hope somebody can help! TIA for any help at all!
