Winter in the Guessing Garden

Winter in the Guessing Garden

I was sick for so long this fall that I'm a bit late with putting my garden to bed for the winter. I planted a bunch of bulbs, which were promptly raided by the local squirrels, and the lawn keeps getting dug up by something. So I was feeling a little disheartened by the dead plants and the animal attacks.

But next Saturday is the last yard waste pickup for our town, so I needed to get some done this weekend. Yesterday I pulled out, cut back and bagged up most of the dead stuff. Today I pulled out my shepherd's hooks and most of the hanging planters. I also planted:

14 Large Cup Narcissi
8 Tazetta Narcissi
6 White hyacinths
15 Neapolitanum Allium

I picked up the bulbs at Christmas Tree Shop on sale. All of them are labeled deer resistant, so I'm hoping the squirrels will keep away. I still don't know what's getting at the grass. It must be something large, it's doing a lot of damage...but we have a fenced in yard, so I can't imagine what it is. I think it's unlikely that raccoons would be tearing up our yard.

There's still a lot to do, so I need to try to get home early from work on Friday at the very least. It gets dark around 5 here in MA these days, and I could use at least another hour out there, plus getting the bags out on the curb for the pickup. Ugh. Can it be spring already?
