yay gardening season!

Hi! I need this community to help me in a bad way! lol My husband and I just purchased our first home! We moved in in January and this is my first year with this garden. Well, the people who lived here before did not really do anything with the yard and so it is pretty overgrown. I am a very novice gardener, which is why I need help! So, the yard is fairly big. At least 30 feet deep and just as wide (my backyard). There is at least 1 hugely overgrown hosta in a built-in planter, and it is just starting to peek out of the ground. How many times do you think that I could split it? Do I just split a little off of each end? Tips? The is also a huge amount of *what I think are* tiger lilies? Can I split/remove these somehow? They are taking over the back of my yard. I would love some plant recommendations for someone who does not have a huge amount of gardening know-how. I am looking for blooms for spring/summer/fall so that I have at least a few things blooming in until the gardening season ends. I would also like to have a couple of climbers that wont get TOO out of hand and take over! Also ideas for hanging baskets? Thanks and sorry for all of the questions! OH and I live in the Refrew County area, in Ontario Canada (near Ottawa)
