Zea Mays

Zea Mays

It's been literally years since I've grown corn, but this spring I've dedicated an 8x10 foot raised bed to another of my wacky mushroom experiments. This time it's shoepeg corn and Stropharia rugoso-annulata, aka, the "Wine Cap" mushroom. This mushroom is often grown with corn in eastern Europe, so I thought I'd give it a try. My corn seedlings are already 6-8" high and seem to like the rain we've been having, so it looks like it's about time I got in there and started to thin them out. So now for the idiot questions. I planted the corn in a manure heavy soil. Does corn benefit from side or top dressing? If I harvest all of the corn by mid-June, will I have time to plant a second crop? It typically doesn't start to freeze here on the Gulf Coast until late November. I'd like to try my hand at making and canning hominy. Has anyone here actually made hominy? Using wood ash and everything? What corn varieties are best for this? How about that funky multi-colored indian corn stuff? Derrr...
