Anyone have experience shopping for less gas guzzling auto?

I am faced with a dilema: my current auto, a 2002 Buick Century is a V6. It really is a gas guzzler. I don't drive it enough now to keep the engine in working order. I just had the oil changed again on it today, and apparently the oil is still thick and smelly because it's not being driven enough. It needs the oil changed 3 times a year now. It also has leaking in the rack and pinion steering, and would take $800 to fix later this year. I am going to have to start auto shopping for a Ford Focus or Chevy Aveo if possible (the lowest MPG from my research). Has anyone here done any research on good, low mpg cars? Does anyone have any good advice in the area of car shopping? I could really use your advice. Or if anyone has any advice how to keep the oil in good condition while not driving as much? Thank you, Laura
