Azeleas

Azeleas

I planted three Azeleas in my front this spring and it seems all three have died. Last year i planted two in the backyard and they did very nicely. Not sure what i did wrong with the ones in the front. I live in zone 6 (specifically Brooklyn NY) and this summer has been extremely dry. I also lost one coral bell and one lilly of the valley. But the azeleas stood out b/c all three of them died and at pretty much the same rate too. The first month or two after i planted them we had plenty of rain but after that it was a slow decline (both in rain and in my plants). I tried watering them and nothing. Could my soil not be acidic enough? Also a huge tree shades my front yard i read the other night its a bad idea to plant azeleas in a spot like that is that true? I guess the real question is should i try for azeleas again next spring or cut my loses and plant something i know will survive like a hosta or stone crop (which both seem to do very well in my front yard, though i am really bored with the look of hostas so i am reluctant to add more). I don't know if it means anything but i also planted rhodendrums and they have faired very nicely. Thanks :)
