Canine gardening — advice?

Last summer I bought several grape vines and a day later my sister's dog carefully pruned them all to within an inch of their lives. This year I have a number of baby trees that I'm trying to protect from two puppies (a 1yr old Lab and a 7mo. old Newfie). The problem in both of these situations is the plants look like sticks randomly poking out of the ground and this is apparently not acceptable in the dog world. Advice on how to protect the vines and trees? For the trees, tomato cages are working to some extent, but the vines are another story. Is it okay to let grape vines grow around a tomato cage? Is there a better way to protect them until they no longer look like random sticks? I'm pretty new to gardening so this may be a dumb question. :) The good news it that the puppies' pursuit of a mole is leading to a fancy new irrigation system as they dig a moat across the backyard. If only they could use their powers for good...
