carrot seeds in containers

Hello, been reading this community for some time now but haven't posted until now. I have procured a pack of Chantenay Carrot seeds that I would like to plant, but I have pretty much zero experience working with vegetable seeds (especially root veggies). The packet provides pretty vague instructions: "plant seeds 2 inches apart, 1/8th inch deep from early spring through mid-summer," and doesn't tell me much about what sort of space, soil, sun or water I should use. I live in Portland, OR, which I believe is zone 6. My yard unfortunately doesn't have the best of soil and most of it is shaded, so I was wondering if it would be a good idea to try planting the carrot seeds into a very deep terracotta pot that gets good sun on my deck. Right now it just has potting soil in it, nothing fancy. Is there a possibility that I could actually yield vegetables in such conditions? Are there any other measures I should take to help these grow? It would tickle me greatly to be successful at growing my own vegetables, so I appreciate any input you wise gardeners can give me :)
