Charged for cable I didn’t get

Charged for cable I didn’t get

Hey poor_skills-ers, I just thought I'd share a recent experience I had with my cable/internet/phone provider, Rogers, up here in Canada. I live with 3 other roommates during the school year, our combined bill for cable, internet and phone usually runs around $145. We get a pretty big cable package worth $60, as well as pretty quick internet. Now that it's summer, I decided to cancel the cable. It was just going to be me and one other girl, and we decided we could live without it. I wasn't locked into a contract of any kind, so there were no cancellation fees. I confirmed this multiple times with different representatives... Rogers is a bit annoying in that you can have two different reps tell you two different things, with no way to track down that original person. Even their name doesn't help, as when you call the number, you're connected to agents from across Canada. So saying "Jackie told me...." is useless. Anyways, I asked for the cancellation date to be May 1. Sure enough, out it went on May 1st. No problems there... until I got my next bill. The billing period was from April 26 - May 25, and included what our normal cable charge would have been. I called them up to complain, and was told that we'd get a $56 credit (the amount of the cable, minus what the charge would have been for the last couple of days of April), which I was fine with. I was told to just subtract $56 from the total cost of the bill and pay that. So I did. I called a couple nights ago, just to make sure the credit had been applied as promised... and our account balance was $56, meaning we didn't get the credit. I get another rep on the phone, and am basically told that the credit won't be applied until our NEXT bill, meaning I still need to pay the $56. I was NOT impressed. I'm in a situation right now where I could afford to pay the $56 and wait until the next bill for it to balance, but my roommate could not even afford to split it with me because she hadn't planned for it and is on a much stricter budget. Of course, our next bill will be very small, what with the $56 credit, plus the bill itself will be smaller because there won't be the cable, but still. It was definitely annoying. So, I figured I'd share this as a warning to everyone who is cutting their entertainment costs: just because you cancel your services on a certain date, it may take awhile for the amount of your bill to change, especially those of you using Rogers
