I'm hoping you all can help me figure out how to deal with this situation. I received a letter in the mail today from a collection agency. They claimed I owe a hospital $105. Now I'm aware that I owe this hospital $38 and have been in contact with them very recently. The hospital billing department said they would resubmit the bill to Medicaid. When I received the letter from the collection agency I called them to see what the deal was, the woman was extremely rude and said that I owe the $105 plus some $15 charge from 2005 I'd never heard of. I never received a bill for this this amount and it's for the same service date as the $38 bill that I know about. I tried calling the hospital but they were closed for the day. If I owed this money wouldn't I have received a bill at some point? What is my best course of action? ETA: I called the hospital today, they confirmed that i do the $105 because they had my address wrong in their system...of course they managed to give the Collection Agency the right address. so they're sending me a bill today. I know I will then need to have it submitted to Medicaid because I'm sure they didn't do that. What should i do to hold off the collection agency while I get this straightened out? I really can't afford to have them report it to the credit bureaus. We're trying to buy a house. Thanks for the great advice!
