Dental bills/question

Dental bills/question

I was getting some dental work done last October when my husband's insurance ran out. Shortly thereafter he was laid off. This left us with a $900 dental bill we could in *no* way afford and me with two teeth left to be worked on. It's now almost a year later and we've not put even the tiniest dent in the bill and my tooth problems are getting painful and persistent. We've applied for credit cards but have been turned down for the amount of money we need (what we were approved for had astronomical interest rates) and our bank (BofA) says they don't give loans for anything smaller then $5,000 anymore (with a car/home/etc as collateral). We're totally stuck on what to do to fix this. College just started and the pain (and occasional swelling) is starting to interfere with school (this *cannot* happen. School was expensive and I can't waste it). Should I try going to another dentist? It's such a shady thing but as a last resort I'll do it if I have to. But don't they have to have my dental records from my previous doctor? Is there another way? Am I totally screwed? I know I should have kept paying them monthly but we couldn't afford the postage, let alone the payments. We'd just setup payments now but we couldn't afford those *and* the current work that needs to be done.
