Divorces in NY
Do NOT spend money on divorce services online like 123Divorce. They give you the same forms the courts and clerks will give you. They promise it will be easy, step by step. It is not true! They also do not tell you that there are additional court fees to pay. Spend the $100 to $200 extra and go to a legal documents service like We The People. All told, you will pay about $800-$900 in NY for an uncontested divorce with no kids, no joint debt, and no joint property. They will make it actually easy (as in, go into their office 3 times, pay the fees in stages, don't even have to go to court come away a few months later with your Certificate of Dissolution of Marriage. I wish I'd been this wise sooner, but learning from experience takes just that - EXPERIENCE. Heck, the same thing could be said about my marriage itself! ;) But at any rate, benefit from my experience. The cheapest route of all is to just get the documents from the clerk's office and courts. That will cost you just under $400 in court fees. But you must BOTH be very organized and ready to cooperate (my ex lacks that former qualification.) The next cheapest route that will WORK is a legal documents service. $500 for the service, $400 for court fees. Then you have lawyers, which is what you need if you have custody issues or joint property and debts to argue over. That starts around $2200 each, plus the $400 in court fees. Long, drawn out court battles = more lawyer fees = more expensive. Is it me, or does it strike anybody as cosmically unfair that in NY, you can get married for $40 with a 24 hour waiting period, but it takes at least $400 and a year-long waiting period to get divorced???
