Fertilizer needs of legumes…

So I've got a pack of "Red Ripper" cowpeas, which seem to love poor soils and intense southern heat. I have plenty of both until I finish sifting out my compost pile. (Oh, guys, this stuff is beautiful. Nearly black, with each shovel full yeilding at least a dozen fat earthworms! I haven't been turning it lately. Building the pile in layers seems to work really well.) So legumes fix nitrogen. For most of the agricultural history of mankind, it's been legumes and rye grass alone that do this, along with the occasional lightning strike. So nitrogen isn't needed, is it? Do they benefit from supplements of phosphorous and pot ash? I have greensand and peruvian bat guano that I can ammend the soil with!
