Floor covering ideas?

Here's the deal. The flooring in my apartment is dark brown linoleum tile. The size and position of my [one and only] window and the architecture of the building combined in the worst possible way so I get very little natural light in the apartment. I tried to counteract this by using lots of soft lights, sponge-painting one of the walls orange, and using a smallish celery-colored area rug and two small tatami-type mats. Still, it's so dark that I have to use a lot of lights at all hours of the day. I have fallen in love with those bright rooms in old buildings where the sun slants across the hardwood floor and everything is warm and glowing...*sigh* I considered moving, but I couldn't find a place that was a good fit for my current situation. So, I'm trying to make better use of the place I have.

Something like this glueless interlocking laminate flooring stuff seems really nice, but it's way beyond what I could afford. The room (it's an efficiency) is 228 square feet, although if I figured out the right way to position the furniture I could probably get away with not doing the entire room. I looked at this stuff on ebay and still didn't find any way I could do even part of the room for less than $100. Can you think of any way I could make some kind of wood or wood-like covering for the floor for cheap? I am pretty handy with tools, but since I'm just renting this apartment, I can't be nailing or gluing anything down. Or anything else I should consider?
