flowering almond problem

flowering almond problem

I've got one of these, which is apparently some sort of flowering almond (the turkey isn't mine). Almost every year, when it's blooming, several branches die off. Instead of going through their usual life cycle of fading and losing their petals, the flowers turn crispy brown, and when they eventually disintegrate, they leave dead branches behind. Why is this? My first thought is that they froze. That the bush itself can handle freezing temps (since it can survive Wisconsin winters), but the blossoms are fragile. But why don't those branches sprout new leaves? In addition, I don't see record of any frost in the last couple of weeks (but I could be wrong). My second thought is... okay, I don't have any more ideas. Anybody else have any? I had one of these at my previous home, in town, and it had the same problem. Usually it's just a few branches. This year, it was the whole bush, save a few flowers here and there.
