Fruit fly tip

Fruit fly tip

Here's a fruit fly tip that sounds pretty good. Get a small bowl that you don't use for food. Ceramic works best because the plastic wrap clings tighter to ceramic. Pour white vinegar into the bowl, not much maybe 1/2 inch in bottom, then drop in a thin slice of lemon. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and pull tightly all away around the sides of the bowl. You want a nice tight flat surface on the top of the bowl with no gaps on the edges. Take a knife with a sharp tip and cut a small slit (1/8") in the center of the bowl through the wrap and a few more around the sides on the top. It's important not to make the slits too large. Make up a bowl for every room you are seeing fruit flies and just put a bowl in the room in an area where it wont be disturbed. What happens is the fruit flies are attracted to the vinegar and lemon. They will walk all over the top of the bowl looking for a way in. When they find one of those small slits they slip in but can't get back out again. Every day that goes more and more of them fall in. I noticed that the 2nd & 3rd day the trap attracted them the most. You don't have to change this mixture every day, it actually works better the older it is. It's gross to look at but there is no odor at all and when the fruit flies are all gone you can either wash out the bowl or toss it. --submitted by Jackie
