Growing basils on my fire escape

Growing basils on my fire escape

I have to share my basils, because I'm just so thrilled with how well they're doing. It's neat to see the physical differences between varieties. morphology of basil At the far left are two lime basil plants. They were gifts, bought at an herb fair and a little traumatized by being dug up, potted, etc. They're recovered nicely, though they're a bit leggy. At the top center is a pot of cinnamon basil (one of two). The half that is more bronze is the half that was facing away from the wall and received more sun exposure (I rotate the pot every two or three days). It grows like a weed! The center, bottom, is a window box full of thai basil. It seems more compact and bushier than the Siam Queen I grew last year, though that may be due to my aggressive pinching (the thing pops into flower every time I turn my back, I swear). I have another thai basil in its own pot. At the far right, you can see one pot of sweet basil and, again, the color difference due to sun exposure. I also have a window box full of sweet basil. I didn't expect them to grow quite so exuberantly, quite so quickly. I usually don't have them this big until late July. I think it's almost time for that first batch of pesto...
