I have some questions about growing mustard. I have grown it a few different years at different times. The first year that I planted it in the ground in june or some such summer month and it grew tall and we ate a lot of it, super easy. So I thought, this is great, we will use mustard greens instead of spinach or lettuces. I think you all can see where this story goes. The second year I planted several containers full in the early spring and dreamed of all of the lovely mustard that I would get. Well, not too long after they didn't need their little covering they bolted. They were only a few inches tall. I was surprised, what is going on? I didn't plant any more that year. This spring I have a couple of earth boxes and I planted them heavily with lettuces, radishes and salad mixes. Apparently there were some mustard greens in these as well. I live in MO and it was cool for a little while and I had them covered and then it got super hot for them, like 80. The little turds bolted again. So my convoluted story of a question is, why are they bolting. Is it the sudden drastic temperature change? Is it their roots getting too warm? Is it just the days getting longer?
