Hello! Help, please!

Long time member, first time poster. First off, hello to everyone! I've really enjoyed this community despite not actually having a garden or growing anything, lol. All your wonderful posts and pictures have had me really looking forward to the day I can get my hands dirty and dig in (pun intended). The thing is, because of our living situation (currently renting a house but due to move out sometime late this coming summer), I didn't want to put in all the time, effort, and money domesticating the wild backyard to make it fit for a garden. So when my boyfriend suggested starting one, I counter suggested with the idea of doing a planter garden, that way, when we do move, we can take it with us. I have, however, some questions. 1) We probably won't be able to start until mid-April. I live in Zone 8a (Sacramento, California). Would mid-April be too late to start growing anything? 2) I'd like to plant some vegetables (i.e. tomatoes, carrots, peppers, herbs)-- would it be too late to start these? 3) I'd also like to grow some flowers-- any ideas on what would do well in containers? Varieties that aren't too difficult to care for? Thanks in advance for all your ideas, answers, and suggestions! Anything will help. :)
