Moving a mattress and boxspring.

Moving a mattress and boxspring.

I need ideas for how to get a mattress and boxspring home from about 70 miles away. My mom is giving us the queen sized bed from her spare bedroom. I'm really excited because this bed is EXTREMELY comfortable, and it's going to buy my husband and I a lot of time before we have to buy a brand new bed again. Our current mattress and boxspring is almost 9 years old now, and it's really had it. So anyway... no one in my family has a vehicle big enough to fit the thing inside, so I feel like I'm pretty much stuck renting something. Uhaul quoted me $101 on the web site, but I called and got a 30% discount... Still, we're talking $75 dollars before taxes (there's a $5 fee for somethign or other), and that's without the extra insurance I usually like to get. I wanted to tie the thing to the top of my car and secure it really, really well, but my mother thinks this would be exceedingly dangerous. For reference, I would be driving the thing home from the space coast of Florida, to Orlando, so lots of I95 and 528 driving for those who are familiar with the area. Any ideas on how I might find a cheaper way to get it home? Any experience with tying a queen size mattress to a car? I have an older escort station wagon and a Dodge Caliber, so the length would be fairly supported, it would stick out over the sides of either vehicle. Thoughts?
