One more newbie doubt (and that’s it, I promise :D)

Right now I'm preparing a pot to grow cherry tomatoes in (the original soil was pretty dry, so on someone's advice I'm hydrating it before adding any compost), but for me as a gardener, tomatoes are something completely new. Not only that, but due to lack of seedlings, what I was able to get from a nursery was a small bag of seeds. I have no experience growing something from scratch. My mom, who like I mentioned before, has the greener thumb of us, is also new to vegetable gardening, but she suggested I germinate the seeds on a damp cotton and when they've grown into respectably size seedlings, replant them in the pot (which should also be ready by then, as my compost is almost ready but not quite there yet). I've read one or two guides on growing cherry tomatoes, but they start from seedlings, so I wanted to confirm with more experienced gardeners that this is what I should do. PS: Thanks to everyone who helped out with my last question. :)
