purchasing a vacuum cleaner

purchasing a vacuum cleaner

i have two cats who shed a lot - i'm talkin' huge tufts of hair floating around my apartment. i could knit a sweater with all the hair they shed in any given day. brushing them doesn't seem to do much difference, and sweeping just pushes the hair around behind furniture and in corners. so i'm thinking i just need to buck up and buy a vacuum cleaner. i've never bought a vacuum cleaner before - when i lived with carpets, i had a hand-me-down kirby that was older than i am. so i don't really know what to look for or what brands are appropriate. i do know that i need the vacuum to work on hardwoods, and it would be nice if it also worked on upholstery (since the cats shed all over the couch, too). a hose attachment would be nice so i can get the baseboards and behind furniture, and i'd like it to be bagless. i also am aiming at spending around $40-$50, although i will pay up to $80 if i need to. so, what do you think, poor_skills? i live in tennessee.
