quick renter issue
our lease expires may 31. we received our notice of lease renewal on monday may 12 attached to our front door. it states that our rent is being raised to 565 (up from 510 for a 1 bedroom) and if we go month to month the rate will be 605. it also stated that we are required to give them 30 days notice if we are planning to not renew the lease. we had inquired when we paid mays rent on the first if our rent was going to be raised and the office lady just snickered and said she couldnt say anything just yet. my question is can they do this? can they raise the rent and only give us essentially 2 wks notice. is there something we can do to fight this? we want to move, (and we were planning on doing it in november but since the rent is being raised so drastically we kind of have to move now) but dont want to be caught in a legal issue stemming from the fact that we didn't notify them 30 days prior to may 31. does this make any sense? i cannot really get my head around the whole issue right now. its all kind of sudden. but what rights do we have here? thanks for your help and advice, in advance.
