Reusable grocery bags (yes, there was a similar title before haha)
Hey yall...if you live near a Kroger or one of its subsidiaries (King Sooper, Fry's, City Market, Dillon's...there are several actually), they have a thing going that you get money off your order for reusing bags. It has to be paper bags or canvas bags, but it's 5 cents off per bag used on each order. That is to say, if you use 3 bags that you brought in, you get 15 cents off your total order. It's a good way to keep from using all those plastic bags, and saves the store money in the long run too, which is the real reason they give the discount. They have actually been doing this for years, but no one knew about it, and you still have to ask for it most of the time, because cashiers forget. The main rule is, you get the discount if you just use your bags...don't try and sack everything in plastic and then put it in your canvas bag ("to keep it clean", said one woman who was a bit confused as to the purpose of this little exercise :-/). But on top of that, the canvas bags they sell in the store are about a dollar apiece, and I love them. They are big, roomy, strong, and have long straps that I can put over my shoulder and a little pouch to keep smaller items in if you want. And, they pay for themselves in a few trips to the grocery. I don't know if other stores are doing this (like say, Walmart or other grocery stores), but it's worth it to ask, because it could just be like it was at my stores before...they didn't know about it till the customers asked about it.
