Saving Leftover Books

Saving Leftover Books

Background: I volunteer at the local library's bookstore. We operate solely on donations, which are mainly books and magazines. However, we often get more than we have space for, which has often resulted in us keeping no more than two copies of each item. What do we do with the rest? We throw them away! I can't tell you the amount of perfect condition Clancys, Pattersons, Steels, Kings, insert any other author besides Sparks right here, romance novels, and many magazines we have thrown away simply because there just wasn't room to keep them. This really bothers me, and I've asked the head honcho why this has to happen and can't we do something else with the books/magazines, and she kind of dances around the issue. Though no one says it, my fellow coworkers have basically said that throwing them away is just the easiest thing to do. I should mention that once items are donated to us, we can do whatever we want with them, though I think many people would get upset if they found out most of what they just donated is getting trashed. My Question: I figure that if I can figure out what do to with these books and don't cause anyone else any hassle, they will let me take care of them. So, any suggestions? I was hoping to find someplace that will use the items and not sell them. Edit: Thank you all so much for your input, it was very helpful! I am looking into many of the options posted, and hopefully this will all work out :)
