Seattle Crisis Resource Directory — anything like this in your city or town?
Many people post questions here about where to get money or other assistance for food, housing, medical care, transportation, etc., and of course these types of resources are usually very location-specific. Fortunately for Seattle the the "Peace Heathens" have put together the wonderful Seattle Crisis Resource Directory covering where to go for help with almost anything you might need: health care (physical and mental), pregnancy, homelessness (teens and adults), disability, discrimination, violence (including sexual and domestic), child care, food, clotihng, housing, household goods, utilities, transportation, education, employment, legal issues, etc. It's a truly amazing resource. Often when I see people post questions, I check their user info and think "Damn, if they were in Seattle I could look it up in the SCRD." So, do you know of anything like this resource for other cities? I think it would be really great if we could compile a list of such directories so that whenever someone has a question that requires a location-specific answer we can point them to the directory for their city. If your city doesn't have such a resource, maybe you could form a group to create one. One reason I think the Peace Heathens' directory is so good is it was created by people who were either poor themselves and/or poverty activists/volunteers. They really understand the needs of the poor and homeless because they've lived it too.
