sorry it’s me again!

Here's my little tale of garden woe: my yard is ridiculously overgrown. The house my husband and I bought two years ago (The Mystery Cottage) was actually empty for almost two years before we bought it and the yard completely untended. We've managed to keep some of the mess at bay while we fixed up the inside of the house, but now it's time to get the yard going in a gardeny direction. Now that I have a handle on what sorts of plants might do well out there, I have this dilemma: I have two big patches of yard that are hip-high messes of weeds. And I don;t mean just dandelions. I'm talking blackberry vines, walnut tree suckers, pampas grass (the Devil's decorative grass!) How do I get this down to dirt? My landscaper neighbor keeps threatening to spray poison on it, which I vehemently DON'T want. Once I hand-pull and dig out all the tall stuff, should I use a rototiller on it? Everytime I look at it, I get overwhelmed. Anyone else ever have to deal with this?
