South Jersey mental health help
Cut because I'm sure this will get quite long! I'm posting for my best friend who lives in Somers Point, New Jersey (near Atlantic City). About a week ago, his mother called him and he could tell she was under the influence of something; talking jibberish, laughing one second, crying the next, etc. Five days ago his mother's boyfriend called him and said his mother was addicted to Xanax and had been taken to the psychiatric unit of a local hospital. Apparently, his mom called the cops and said the boyfriend was beating her. The cops showed up (*Note there is a history of physical violence in the relationship - him abusing her) and after questioning both parties decided the mother was "making up the story" and they escorted her to a psychiatric unit. She spent about four days there and was deemed "okay" and returned home to the boyfriend. Last night (this is just what the boyfriend has relayed to my friend) the two went out to dinner and the mother began acting frantic and said that the boyfriend has poisoned her food and she wanted to go home. They went home and she accused him of crushing up pills and putting them in her food. She again called the cops. The cops showed up, found the bottle of pills with one missing (which was her dosage), and again escorted her to the psychiatric unit. She was 'evaluated' and sent home because she 'doesn't have insurance and they couldn't find anything wrong with her'. She ended up getting a cab to my friend's house where she promptly went to sleep. Today my friend is at work and has a missed call from the boyfriend. He calls back and he informs him he has had a restraining order issued on the mother and she cannot come get her belongings. If I'm correct, can't his mom call the police and have them escort her there to get her belongings? Or send someone in her place if she writes a list of things? She has nothing with her other than what is on her back. Not that this matters, but just makes me angry...his mom had a miniature horse. While she was in the hospital for the 4 days, the boyfriend sold it because he said, "I don't know how to take care of it". Also, today my friend's mother informs him she is on no medication whatsoever and is fine.(I'm not sure what medication she accused him of crushing up) I just assumed if she was addicted to Xanax (which was prescribed to her, but she was abusing them), wouldn't they give her something else? Or do they just take you off those medications? Does anyone know any places in the South Jersey area that can help his mother get the mental health treatment she needs? She is in her early 50's and has no other health problems that we know of. She has a part-time job so she doesn't have much of an income and even then I think she may just be paid in cash. In short my questions: How does she get her belongings from the house? They have both lived there together for almost 30yrs. Are there any free/close to free mental health clinics in South Jersey? Thank you so much. ETA: The pony is NOT the issue...I'm MORE concerned about my friend's mom getting help. I just stated that he got rid of the pony.
