Water heater issues…because getting water damage is not a poor skill…

So, we had a new gas water heater installed back in March. We basically purchased the one that fit in our price range and it has a 6 year warranty on it. The water heater is located in the basement in a utility room. We purchased it from Home Depot and paid them for the installation. Everything was fine until last week... I went down there to do some laundry and noticed that there was a ring of water around the base of the heater and it was forming a river about 3 feet long that stopped short of the wall. I also noticed another small river on the other side heading toward the furnace. The furnace is behind the water heater. Neither me or my husband has seen anything like this, so we decided to turn the heater off in case something was wrong and it was going to leak all over. My husband called GE and they told him it was probably just condensation. We tried to turn it back on but my husband couldn't get the pilot to light. So they sent a plumber out on Thursday who re-lit it for us and then checked the pressure and all that and said it was ok. Except I went downstairs just now and there is another river coming out from the bottom. So my question here is is this REALLY normal? I mean, seriously, I'm going to have to deal with rivers of freaking water on my floor like this every other day? Is this what people do?I don't know if this is some kind of manufacturer defect with this model or what. I don't know what I should be doing at this point. Do we call GE again? I'm afraid they will just say it's condensation and there's nothing they will do about it. We really can not afford to pay for a different water heater. I'm starting to feel like we've been ripped off somehow with this leaky water heater. I really hope that is not the case.
